SYDNEY Swans co-captain Brett Kirk will face the tribunal this week after he was charged with recklessly making contact with an umpire in the win over Hawthorn on Saturday.

Kirk made contact with umpire Matthew James in the second quarter of the match and the Match Review Panel referred the matter directly to the tribunal. Kirk will not be given the chance to submit an early plea.

The ruling comes as part of the AFL’s crackdown on contact with umpires.

The no-go zone behind umpires at centre bounces was trialled in the NAB Cup but was not brought in for the home and away season. The AFL had indicated it would crack down on reckless contact with umpires, including bumping another player into the umpire.

In other tribunal news, Essendon’s Adam McPhee and Port Adelaide’s Daniel Motlop have been offered suspensions for striking.

McPhee has been offered a two-match suspension by the Match Review Panel for striking Fremantle’s Scott Thornton while Motlop has been offered a one-game ban for striking West Coast’s Adam Hunter. Neither player can reduce their sentences with an early plea.

Brisbane Lions midfielder Luke Power and Essendon’s Angus Monfries were also charged with making contact with an umpire but their charges were assessed as negligent rather than reckless and both have been offered a $1950 fine with an early plea.

Bulldog star Jason Akermanis has been offered 93.75 points towards his future record after he was cited for making forceful contact from front-on against North Melbourne’s Scott Thompson.

Richmond’s Jake King was charged for engaging in rough conduct against Geelong’s Steve Johnson but can accept a reprimand and 93.75 points towards his future record.

North Melbourne’s Michael Firrito was charged with striking Bulldogs captain Brad Johnson but can accept 60 points towards his future record.

Match day reports against Brisbane Lions skipper Jonathan Brown and Collingwood’s Heath Shaw have been thrown out.
