Essendon coach Kevin Sheedy has revealed the injuries suffered by Ricky Dyson during a late-night assault last Saturday are worse than initially thought and have required corrective surgery. The 20-year-old was set upon by an undisclosed number of assailants in Rouse Street, Port Melbourne, as he waited for a taxi after a player function. "You wouldn't wish the injury upon yourself - I wouldn't and I'm a pretty knockaround sort of bloke," Sheedy said from Fawkner Park where a small group of players were put through sprint drills on Tuesday. "It's just one of those things where a player just said, ' that's it, see ya later boys, I'm off'. You can't help that, it just sort of happened. "I popped in on Sunday night and saw him with his mum and dad - you just wonder about some things. "They're quite happy with the surgery they've done, but I would probably say (he'll be released) within the week." The incident has caused Sheedy to rethink the club's policy on players attending social functions. "Most club's when they go out and have a night out - it was a function for Adam Ramanauskas - you just don't let one player go to a taxi by himself," he said. "From that point of view I think we'll have to draw up some player rules and players that do leave a function just go out and get a cab by groups of four. "You've just got to be sensible and that's not just because you're a footballer, I have kids and any of our children should just make sure they look after each other when they're out. It's a pretty tough little world out there at the moment." Sheedy said the injuries shouldn't cause too great a disruption to Dyson's pre-season, but was unsure to what degree he would be affected mentally by the incident. "I won't be rushing him, (but) it's a facial injury mainly," he said. "It'll leave a scar there and affect how he sees maybe Melbourne society and Australian society as it happens quite often - we've got to look at ourselves in this city sometimes with those sorts of actions."
