Essendon coach Kevin Sheedy says he is "pretty confident" the Bombers will still secure Carlton vice-captain Scott Camporeale in December's pre-season draft despite failing to strike a trade with the Blues for his services on Friday.
Camporeale, one of just two survivors from Carlton's last premiership team in 1995, is still a Carlton player for now, but he has already declared he wants to join Essendon after failing to agree to a new contract with the Blues.
The Bombers believe the 30-year-old, 233-game veteran still has at least two good years in him and could help the club's young midfielders develop enormously during that time.
Sheedy was far from disappointed at failing to secure the 2000 Carlton best and fairest winner and All-Australian before Friday's 2pm trade deadline, knowing the Bombers can still claim him at pick four in the pre-season draft.
"I am pretty confident, he will be offered a good contract," Sheedy said of Camporeale.
"The situation is we have fourth pick (in the pre-season draft) and we are not sure what the clubs ahead of us will do."
However with Carlton having the first pick and not likely to re-draft a player that has already walked out on them, and Collingwood (pick two) and Hawthorn (pick three) committed to signing younger players, the Bombers appear likely to still get their man.
Sheedy said he was not surprised the clubs failed to agree to a trade deal on Friday.
"That's fair enough," he said.
"Some of our players didn’t want to go to Carlton and Carlton perhaps didn't want to trade."
Sheedy said the Bombers wanted to swap young forward Ted Richards to Carlton for Camporeale but he wanted to join premiers Sydney next year rather than wooden-spooners Carlton.
"Ted Richards wanted to go to Sydney so that's where he went," Sheedy said.
"(But) we would still love to get Camporeale to Essendon, he has put his hand up to leave (Carlton) and that is why we went after him."
